A work to commemorate the retirement of a cherished colleague….

Who can escape retail’s heady hum
As shoppers stroll, pressing to and fro -
Poring over the next outfit, shoes, scent or jewel,
One section yields to the next in tow.

Through her eyes it becomes real,
Mortar-buying magic springs to life.
A dance of the visual and positioned merchandise,
Behind what people can see, she can hide.

All the care that drew them in,
Toward purchases that fulfill,
The register yields gift receipts,
As the public lurches with uncertain will.

Through the maze she navigates –
Calm and steady, somehow ever sure
That Kids, Home, Active, IA, and all -
Align together in manner ever pure.

As each shop display is set in relief,
Allowing the space to be most welcoming,
That statue of retail, the mannequin –
Stands dressed to the nines, stylish detail showing.

But all the square footage, vendors and frames
Fade into how gently, yet brightly she shines –
The unsung visual aide diligently creates
For all those blessed enough to work beside.

To our dear Suzanne we selfishly want,
To keep you as colleague just one more day.
But now life’s journey turns to fun and to time
Spent pursuing all wishes you could not say.

We thank you for all you have given to us
Dedication, and being a good friend,
Your steady and strong will be much missed.
Please come visit us as the time portends.
